The Israeli Occupation of Palestinian Territory

Whereas:
For 35 years, Israel has been illegally (according to the Oslo Accord) occupying the West Bank and the Gaza Strip; AND
U.S. taxpayers have been funding Israel's military at $2 billion per year with an additional $840 million in economic aid per year; AND
The 3 million Palestinians living under the occupation of Israel are denied freedom of movement and other basic human rights; AND
We are in a position, given who and where we are, to affect U.S. policy (and thereby Israeli policy) toward the conflict.

And whereas:
As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe, as Joseph Smith wrote, that we are better off when "every man [seeks] the interest of his neighbor" (D&C 82:19).

Now therefore let it be resolved that:
1.We support the right of Palestinians to achieve self determination and an end to the illegal Israeli occupation.
2. We lend our voices in protest against the oppression of Palestinians under the Israeli occupation with the hopes of a peaceful and just outcome.
3. We find violent attacks against civilian populations abhorrent and call on both sides to reject violence as a means of resolving this conflict.
4.We urge the United States government to use its influence to encourage both sides in the conflict to undertake good faith negotiations for long-term peace.
5.We support the creation of an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza.
6.We would like to educate ourselves and others about the conflict, including the way in which Christian and other religious attitudes and assumptions influence the conflict.

Let it be further resolved that:
Mormons for Equality and Social Justice support--through voluntary actions of the membership--organized movements to alleviate the conflict according to the aforestated principles and methods.
