The Environment
Whereas:
| Our current economy is based on practices which use the Earth’s resources for short-term profit, with little regard to the state of the environment, respect for life, or the needs of future generations; AND |
| Polluted air and waterways, global warming, extinction rates, and the increased consumption of natural resources are examples of how we have made the pursuit of profit our highest priority at the expense of our responsibility to care for the Earth.
|
And whereas LDS scriptures and leaders teach:
| All things were created "for the benefit and the use of man, both to please the eye and to gladden the heart...to be used, with judgment, not to excess, neither by extortion" ; AND |
| "For it is expedient that I, the Lord, should make every man accountable, as a steward over earthly blessings, which I have made and prepared for my creatures" ; AND |
| "[A]ll our commercial transactions must be confined to this little earth and its wealth cannot be increased or diminished; and though the improvements in the arts of life which have taken place within the memory of many now living are very wonderful, there is no question that extravagance has more than kept pace with them" . |
Now therefore let it be resolved that MESJ:
| 1. | Urges all citizens to reduce their impact on the environment. |
| 2. | Calls upon corporations to engage in more environmentally sustainable practices. |
| 3. | Requests national and local leaders to promote responsible policies which reduce pollution, protect biodiversity, and conserve resources for future generations. |
