Guidelines for Drafting a Resolution

Resolutions are adopted by consensus of the membership at periodic MESJ conferences. Our resolutions are written in a three-part format, following a pattern called see-judge-act:

  1. We see a social reality.
  2. We judge it according to the teachings of our faith tradition.
  3. We resolve to act.

(1) See. Head the first part of the resolution Whereas. Then list the facts about the reality you're addressing. Be specific as you describe the problem or issue.

(2) Judge. Head the second part of the resolution And whereas. Here refer to scriptural or prophetic teachings that speak to the issue. You might use full quotations, if there are just a few of them; or you might summarize principles.

(3) Act. Head the last part of the resolution Now therefore let it be resolved that. List the specific actions you believe should be taken, or the viewpoints MESJ ought to adopt, regarding this issue.

All the resolutions posted on this web site demonstrate this three-part pattern.
