Chris and Komang Borland
San Francisco - Bulletin Board
On Tuesday May 29 - 2007 our San Francisco
chapter got together and met some new friends that joined us. We discussed
recent events like the BYU Alternative Commencement and the PBS documentary
'The Mormons'.
We talked about what it takes as a progressive Latter Day Saint to keep
one's balance in a conservative church environment.
We watched the DVD 'Truth and Conviction' portraying Helmuth
Hübener and two friends
from his LDS branch who formed a resistance group against the NAZI propaganda.
(see link below) The dramatic events shown in this documentary film left
a lasting impression. It is good when we can see the complexities of situations
and the many factors involved. Helmuth Hubener deserves to be known much
better-- and his story inspired us to be a little more bold in our declaration
of the beliefs we hold to be true.
Our meeting was joined by Chris
Borland, he and his spouse Komang (see picture above), are new members
of our chapter. We're glad they joined us!
Emily Bates, former contact person of the Boston chapter, recently moved
to the Bay-Area, and is familiar with a group that meets regularly in
the Bay Area as: bite
size revolutions ! We will explore if perhaps we can join forces.
Welcome to our chapter Emily!
The San Francisco chapter took part
in a "Habitat for Humanity' activity. Among the many volunteers working
on this project were six members of MESJ San Francisco. The particular
project at Daly City, just south of San Francisco, is the construction
of 4 homes for needy families who otherwise could not afford a home. These
homes are build entirely by volunteer efforts. The gift of the security
of a home for families is probably one of the greatest you can give. There
were various tasks assigned at the site and some were less strenuous than
others, varying from jackhammering, nailing boards/panel, to painting
or helping transport supplies. MESJ members were spotted putting in a
retaining wall behind the houses and putting in temporary drainage pipes
to avoid water flooding the contruction site. The weather was great, spirits
were high. There's definitely something special about community service
that can only be experienced by doing it!
