International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
November 25

Read:
Isaiah 54:14 (3 Nephi 22:14)

Explain:
Since 1981, women's activists have observed November 25 as a day to highlight the problem of violence against women. This date was chosen to commemorate the 1961 assassination of the three Mirabal sisters, who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. This day became a UN observance in 1999. The observance is an occasion to focus on the various forms of violence against women, including domestic violence, rape, sexual harassment, the torture of women prisoners, and "honor killings." Eliminating violence against women will require changing deep-rooted, long-standing societal attitudes that devalue women.

Activity:
During the day, wear a white or purple ribbon to raise awareness about violence against women.

Pray:

  • Give thanks for the progress that has been made towards changing societal attitudes that devalue women.
  • Pray for an end to violence against women in all its forms.
  • Pray that women who have been victims of violence will experience the Savior's healing power in their lives.
