International Day for Tolerance
November 16
Read:
Matthew 7:12
Explain:
Tolerance is the essence of the Golden Rule--treating others as we want to be treated. Elder Russell M. Nelson has said, "Intolerance seeds contention; tolerance supersedes contention. Tolerance is the key that opens the door to mutual understanding and love" . On November 16, 1995, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted a Declaration on Principles of Tolerance. This declaration defines tolerance as "accepting the fact that human beings, naturally diverse in their appearance, situation, speech, behavior and values, have the right to live in peace and to be as they are." The International Day for Tolerance is observed each year on November 16 to address ongoing problems of intolerance, prejudice, and discrimination.
Pray:
- Give thanks for the teachings of the scriptures and the living prophets about tolerance.
- Give thanks for the progress that has been made towards ending discrimination and protecting the human rights of all people.
- Pray for those who still suffer intolerance, prejudice, or discrimination.
