International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict
November 6

Read:
Isaiah 1:7 or Moses 7:48

Explain:
The tragedy of war extends beyond human death and suffering: the environment, too, suffers. War leads to pollution of land and water supplies and the destruction of natural resources such as forests. Farmland may be deliberately destroyed or rendered unusable by land mines. Armies and refugees alike leave devastation in their wake. The effects of war on the environment can be felt for years after peace has been declared. The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict was founded in 2001 to raise awareness of war's impacts on the environment. The UN hopes to establish laws to protect the environment in times of war, much like the Geneva Conventions protect people.

Pray:

  • Give thanks for the world God created and for the blessing of peace.
  • Pray for those who live in places where there is currently war or conflict, or who live in places that are still recovering from damage caused by war.
  • Pray that governments will be moved by a spirit of peacemaking and wise stewardship.
