International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction
2nd Wednesday in October

Read:
Matthew 24:6-7

Explain:
The Lord has warned us to expect natural disasters; but he has also told us "if ye are prepared ye shall not fear" (D&C 38:30). Societies can take various measures to prepare for natural disasters and thus reduce damage or loss of life. Also, countries can work together to provide disaster relief and to rebuild. During 1990-1999, the United Nations focused special attention on disaster prevention and preparedness. All through that decade, the second Wednesday of October was observed as the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction. In 2001, it was decided to make this a continuing observance.

Pray:

  • Give thanks for the teachings of the restored gospel about preparedness.
  • Pray for those who have recently lost their homes, livelihood, or loved ones because of natural disasters.
  • Pray that governments will work together to prevent and respond to natural disasters.
