United Nations Day
October 24
Read:
Psalm 133:1
Explain:
The United Nations was founded on October 24, 1945. Today 191 countries belong to the United Nations--almost every country in the world. The purposes of the United Nations, as laid out in the UN Charter, are to maintain international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among nations; to cooperate in solving international economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian problems; to promote respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; and to be a center for harmonizing nations' efforts to achieve these ends. Like all organizations, the UN has problems and challenges; but it is one of the most important instruments available for addressing temporal need in the world.
Pray:
- Give thanks for the spirit of unity and cooperation reflected in the founding of the United Nations.
- Give thanks for the UN's work in promoting peace, human rights, and humanitarianism.
- Pray that people throughout the world will work towards the goals laid out in the UN Charter.
