Explain:
The scriptures challenge us to lay down our weapons--to renounce war and proclaim peace. The principle of peacemaking has a special urgency in the age of nuclear weapons. In 1978, the UN General Assembly called for the founding of Disarmament Week, to begin on October 24, the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. This week was to highlight the danger of the arms race and the need to end it. Since then, much progress has been made towards abolishing nuclear weapons, as well as chemical weapons and land mines. However, the total elimination of nuclear weapons has not yet become a reality.

Pray:

  • Give thanks for the end of the Cold War, which has greatly reduced the threat of nuclear war.
  • Pray that the world's leaders will act wisely to prevent the horror of a nuclear attack.
  • Pray for the success of ongoing efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, and land mines.
  • Pray for the coming of the day when nations will beat their swords into plowshares.
