International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
October 17
Read:
Moses 7:18
D&C 49:20 or D&C 104:17-18
Explain:
The scriptures promise us that it is possible to create a society without poverty. The scriptures also use sharp language to warn us that poverty is against God's will. Poverty is a violation of human rights. Every one has the right to adequate food, clothing, housing, medical care, and social services. Yet over one billion people live on less than one dollar a day. Because of the effects of poverty, one third of the people living in the world's least developed countries will die before age 40. The human family has the resources and technology to eliminate poverty, if only we have the will. The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty calls attention to the need to end poverty for once and for all.
Pray:
- Give thanks for the blessings of adequate food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and social services.
- Give thanks for the LDS heritage of organizing against poverty.
- Pray for individuals and families living in poverty.
- Pray that the nations will dedicate themselves to ending poverty for once and for all.
