World Food Day
October 16
Read:
Matthew 6:11
Explain:
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) calls hunger "the most critical manifestation of poverty." Around 800 million people in the world go hungry every day. Over one billion people survive on less than one dollar a day. Every 4 seconds, someone dies of hunger. When it doesn't kill, poor nutrition leads to ill health and a decreased capacity to work or learn. The problem of hunger becomes even more appalling when we consider how many people in the world eat too much. World Food Day has been observed each year since 1981 to raise awareness about the ongoing need to fight hunger--to ensure that all people have their daily bread. This day commemorates the founding of the FAO on October 16, 1945.
Activity:
You might deem it appropriate to observe World Food Day with a family fast. You could then make a special fast offering to the Church or to another organization that fights hunger.
Pray:
- Give thanks for the blessings of adequate food and good nutrition.
- Give thanks for the knowledge and technology that make it possible to produce more food today than at any other time in history.
- Pray for those who experience hunger or poor nutrition.
- Pray for those who are working to find solutions to hunger and poverty.
- Pray that a spirit of moderation and charity will prevail among those who have more food than they need.
