World Mental Health Day
October 10

Read:
Matthew 4:23-24

Explain:
Healing was--and is--an important part of the Savior's ministry. Mental illness causes great suffering in today's world. It is estimated that 450 million people suffer from some kind of mental disorder, and that 1 in every 4 people will suffer mental illness (including depression) at some time in their lives. One million people commit suicide each year, and 10-20 million people attempt it. Yet only a small percentage of people with mental illness receive the care they need. Individuals with mental illness often experience discrimination, and mental illness creates great burdens for families and communities. The World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) co-sponsor World Mental Health Day each year on October 10 to raise awareness about the need to help people with mental illness.

Pray:

  • Give thanks for progress in our understanding of mental illness and how to treat it.
  • Pray for the efforts of those who work to treat and prevent mental illness.
  • Pray that people suffering from mental illness, and their families, will experience the Savior's healing power in their lives.
