World Teachers Day
October 5

Read:
D&C 46:17-18

Explain:
The scriptures tell us that the ability to teach is a gift. Teachers play a crucial role in the development of societies. Yet growing populations and poor working conditions (including low salaries) have created a worldwide shortage of teachers. In developing countries, there may be as many as 100 students for every teacher. Not only does the teachers shortage decrease the quality of education students receive; it also makes teaching less appealing as a profession, thus perpetuating the shortage in a vicious cycle. World Teachers Day is an occasion to honor teachers and to highlight the urgent need to improve the quality of education. October 5 is the date on which the UN's Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers was signed in 1966.

Pray:

  • Give thanks for teachers who have had a positive impact in family members' lives.
  • Give thanks for teachers worldwide who endure poor working conditions while trying to make a difference for their students.
  • Pray that societies will give higher priority to improving teachers' working conditions and the quality of education.
