International Day of Peace
September 21
Read:
Isaiah 2:4 (2 Nephi 12:4)
Explain:
Beginning in 1981, the opening day of the regular session of the United Nations General Assembly was observed as International Day of Peace. In 2001, the observance was shifted to September 21. It is hoped that this will be "a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and peoples to honor a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the day." Around 10:00 a.m. (EST) at United Nations headquarters, the Secretary-General delivers a special message, then rings the Peace Bell, which is cast from coins donated by people from around 60 countries. When the bell sounds, people throughout the world are encouraged to reflect for a moment on the universal goal of peace.
Activity:
Encourage family members to observe, if possible, a moment of silence
at 10:00 a.m. (EST) on International Day of Peace.
Pray:
- Give thanks for the blessing of peace.
- Give thanks for efforts to promote peace in the world.
- Pray for those places in the world where there is war or violent conflict.
- Pray for the promised day when war will be no more.
