International Day of the World's Indigenous People
August 9

Read:
1 Ne. 13:13-14

Explain:
In his vision of the future, Nephi saw that the Lamanites would be scattered and smitten by European colonists. Throughout the world, indigenous peoples have suffered as a result of colonization. There are currently about 300 million indigenous peoples living in over 70 countries. They often suffer discrimination and are among the poorest of the poor. They have higher rates of mortality, lower life expectancy, and more chronic illness than non-indigenous peoples. Many indigenous peoples have been driven from their traditional lands and struggle to preserve their languages and cultures. During the decades 1995-2015, August 9 is being observed as the International Day of the World's Indigenous People to raise awareness about the problems faced by indigenous peoples.

Pray:

  • Give thanks for your family's cultural heritage.
  • Give thanks for the ways cultural diversity enriches the Church and the world.
  • Pray that indigenous peoples will be able to preserve their cultural heritages.
  • Pray for the efforts of those who work to address the problems of indigenous peoples.
