International Day in Support of Victims of Torture
June 26
Read:
Isaiah 54:14 (3 Nephi 22:14)
Explain:
Even though torture is banned by international law, evidence suggests that it continues to occur in as many as 130 countries. Men, women, and even children are tortured. Torture has devastating effects on victims and their families. Victims of torture suffer physically, psychologically, and socially. They may suffer flashbacks, memory lapses, nightmares, depression, shame, and personality breakdown. In the United States alone, there may be as many as 400,000 torture victims now living. The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture was proclaimed in 1997. It marks the day on which the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment entered into force, on June 26, 1987.
Pray:
- Give thanks for the international laws that make torture illegal.
- Pray that those laws will be respected and that torturers will be brought to justice.
- Pray for those who provide aid to torture victims and their families.
- Pray that victims of torture will experience the Savior's healing power in their lives.
