World Environment Day
June 5

Read:
D&C 59:18-20 or D&C 104:13-14

Explain:
The scriptures teach us to be wise stewards of the environment. While industry and development have improved people's standard of living, they also produce pollution and lead to the destruction of natural resources. Societies need to make protecting the environment a top priority in order to ensure a safe and prosperous future. World Environment Day is an occasion for recommitting ourselves to wise stewardship. People are encouraged to observe the day with environmentally conscious activities such as tree planting or clean-up campaigns. World Environment Day is observed on June 5 because that is the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in 1972.

Pray:

  • Give thanks for the world that our Heavenly Father created for His children.
  • Give thanks for the growing global awareness of the need to practice wise stewardship.
  • Pray that societies worldwide will make protecting the environment a top priority.
  • Pray that the Spirit will help experts find solutions for sustainable development.
  • Commit before the Lord to make specific environmentally friendly changes in the way you live.
