World No-Tobacco Day
May 31
Read:
D&C 89:8
Explain:
Tobacco kills one person every eight seconds, for a total of four million deaths per year. If current rates continue, then the figure will rise to ten million deaths a year by 2030. Seventy percent of these deaths will occur in the developing world. Tobacco will kill more people than malaria, tuberculosis and maternal and childhood conditions combined.
Tobacco products are the only products which, when used as intended, kill up to half the people who use them. Yet, in many countries, tobacco is virtually unregulated. Since 1988, the World Health Organization has promoted World No-Tobacco Day to raise awareness about the health risks of tobacco and to encourage regulation of tobacco products and advertising.
Pray:
- Give thanks for the Word of Wisdom.
- Give thanks that there is a growing awareness of the health risks of tobacco and a stronger movement to regulate tobacco products.
- Pray that this trend will continue, especially in developing countries.
- Pray for those whose health has been damaged by tobacco use and for those who are trying to quit.
