Explain:
The Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories began in the 1960s to show support for African peoples seeking independence from colonial powers. Since that time, 80 million people have acheived the power of self-governance, and over 50 new independent countries have come into being. Today only a few non-self-governing territories remain (mostly small islands governed by Britain or the United States). The Week of Solidarity can serve as an opportunity to celebrate the principles of independence, equality, and international cooperation. The week can help us remember that while colonialism is largely a thing of the past, exploitation and threats to freedom are ongoing problems.
Pray:
- Give thanks for living in an independent, democratic country, and pray that the people of your country will use their self-governance wisely.
- Give thanks that so many peoples were able to achieve independence during the 20th century.
- Pray for the economic development and political stability of former colonies.
- Pray for people who are exploited or whose freedoms are restricted.
