International Day for Biological Diversity
May 22

Read:
Genesis 1:26 (Moses 2:26; Abraham 4:26)

Explain:
In the beginning, God gave human beings stewardship over life on earth. But in many ways, human beings have not been wise stewards. Economic pressures have led societies to exploit ecosystems for short-term gains. As a result, many species of animal and plant life have become extinct or endangered, and ecosystems have been placed in long-term jeopardy. At present rates of extinction, as many as 20% of all species could disappear in 30 years. The International Day for Biological Diversity calls attention to the need for greater conservation efforts, sustainable development, and environmentally friendly technologies. (The International Day for Biological Diversity used to be observed on December 29, but was changed to May 22 in 2001.)

Pray:

  • Give thanks for the amazing diversity of life in the world God created.
  • Pray for the efforts of those who are trying to save endangered species.
  • Pray for the efforts of those who are working to develop environmentally friendly technologies and strategies for sustainable development.
  • Pray that there will be a deeper public commitment to protecting ecosystems.
