World Telecommunication Day
May 17

Explain:
Telecommunication has revolutionized the world, opening up new possibilities for education and trade. However, because many of the world's people do not have access to the new technologies, a "digital divide" has arisen between the technological haves and have-nots. World Telecommunication Day focuses on the challenge of bridging that divide. Telecommunication has great potential in fighting poverty--but only if the technology is made accessible to those who most need it, especially people in rural areas and women (who make up 60-70% of the world's poor). World Telecommunication Day is observed on May 17 to commemorate the founding of the International Telegraph Union--which later became the International Telecommunication Union--on May 17, 1865.
Pray:
- Give thanks for the ways telecommunication has enriched your life.
- Pray that the Spirit will inspire experts and government leaders to find ways to bridge the "digital divide."
- Pray that those who develop and market these technologies will give greater priority to making telecommunication available to the world's poor.
