World Press Freedom Day
May 3
Read:
D&C 30:11
Explain:
Latter-day Saints have a history of standing up for what they know to be true even in the face of violent opposition. Today, journalists all over the world face the possibility of violence as they work to disseminate the truth through the press. World Press Freedom Day exists to emphasize the importance of a free press. It is a day of remembrance for the many journalists who have been killed because of their profession. It is also an occasion to inform citizens that in dozens of countries around the world, publications are censored, fined, suspended, and closed down, while journalists, editors, and publishers are harassed, attacked, imprisoned, detained, and murdered.
Pray:
- Give thanks for constitutional guarantees of freedom of the press.
- Give thanks for the many journalists who work--sometimes at the risk of their lives--to disseminate the truth.
- Pray that the principle of a free press will be respected throughout the world.
- Pray for the safety of journalists, and for the families of journalists who have been imprisoned or lost their lives.
