World Book and Copyright Day
April 23
Read:
D&C 88:118
Explain:
The scriptures encourage us to learn from the world's best books. World Book and Copyright Day serves as a worldwide tribute to books and authors. This day is an opportunity to encourage everyone, especially young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and to gain a new respect for the power of books to contribute to the progress of the human race. April 23 is a symbolic date for world literature, because on this day in 1616, two great authors died: Shakespeare, the English poet and playwright, and Cervantes, who wrote the Spanish classic, Don Quixote.
Pray:
- Give thanks for the rise of literacy and printing, which make it possible for many more people than ever before to read for themselves the world's best books.
- Give thanks for specific books that have impacted your life.
- Pray that the Spirit will inspire authors around the world to write books that can be a force for good.
- Pray for the efforts of those who are working to end illiteracy.
