World Meteorological Day
March 23
Read:
Luke 12:54-55
Explain:
People have always tried to predict the weather in order to be better
prepared for natural disasters like storms, floods, and famines. Modern
technology has greatly enhanced our ability to predict the weather. Still,
during the 1990s, close to 200 million people were killed in weather or
climate-related disasters--seven times the number of people affected by
armed conflict. Cyclones, monsoons, heat waves, droughts, cold spells,
blizzards, and global warming seriously impact development. World Meteorological
Day calls attention to the need to better predict and prepare for these
kinds of natural disasters. This day commemorates the coming into force
of the Convention of the World Meteorological Organization, on March 23,
1950.
Pray:
- Give thanks for the technology that allows meteorologists to predict
weather or climate-related disasters.
- Pray for those who have lost homes, livelihoods, or loved ones in recent weather-related disasters.
- Pray that experts will come to better understand the causes of global climate change, so that solutions can be found.
