Explain:
On March 21, 1960, in the township of Sharpeville, South Africa, police
opened fire and killed 69 people who were peacefully demonstrating against
apartheid (South Africa's system of racial segregation). The United Nations
General Assembly subsequently declared March 21 the International Day
for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This later became the first
day in an entire Week of Solidarity with the Peoples Struggling against
Racism and Racial Discrimination. These observances focus the world's
attention on the need for all people to work together to combat racism
and discrimination wherever they exist. Racial prejudice still affects
the way people are treated; racial discrimination still bars individuals
from equal opportunity; and racial violence--even ethnic cleansing--still
erupts around the world.
Pray:
- Give thanks for the progress that has been made towards ending racial discrimination and towards securing equal civil rights for all people.
- Pray for an end to racial prejudice, discrimination, and violence in our world.
- Pray that the Savior's power will bring healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation as societies seek to overcome the effects of racism in their history.
