International Mother Language Day
February 21
Read:
2 Nephi 31:3 or D&C 90:11
Explain:
The scriptures tell us that God speaks to all people in their own language.
Like our culture, our mother language gives a distinctive color to the
way we understand the world around us. Indeed, a people's language is
a vital part of their cultural heritage. Yet in the past 300 years, many
languages have died out or disappeared, especially in the Americas and
Australia; and of the 6,000 or so languages spoken in the world today,
about half are seriously endangered or dying. International Mother Language
Day is observed every year to promote linguistic diversity, multilingual
education, and greater awareness of the diverse cultural heritages of
the world's people.
Pray:
- Give thanks for the gift of your cultural heritage, your mother language,
and its literature.
- Give thanks for the Church's growth among different language groups,
and for the unique gifts that Latter-day Saints from different cultures
bring to our faith community.
- Pray for the efforts of those who are working to preserve endangered
languages or to promote appreciation for cultural diversity.
- Pray that the world's rich cultural and linguistic diversity will
not be lost.
