They Gave Their Lives

Suggested Hymns:
Do What Is Right (Hymns 237)
Each Life That Touches Ours for Good (Hymns 293)
As I Have Loved You (Hymns 308)

Discuss:
Memorial Day was founded to honor fallen soldiers in the spirit of remembering those who gave their lives for freedom. We can take this opportunity to remember others, as well, who have lost their lives in that cause. Besides soldiers, who else can you think of who has been killed while promoting liberty and justice? (Examples: Martin Luther King, Oscar Romero.)

People can "give their lives" to a cause not only in the sense of dying for it, but also in the sense of devoting their lives to it. Who can you think of who "gave their lives" for liberty and justice in this second sense? (Examples: Susan B. Anthony working for women's suffrage, Dorothy Day working for peace and justice for the poor.)

Read:
John 15:13
Mosiah 2:16-17
D&C 4:2

Discuss:
What can we learn from the examples of the individuals we've named about Christlike love and whole-hearted service?
How can we honor the heritage these individuals left?

Activity:
Pass around the room some token of remembrance--perhaps a poppy or a lighted candle. As each family member takes the token, invite that person to state something he or she resolves to do in the spirit of honoring the heritage of the individuals you've remembered tonight. Alternatively, family members could voice thanks for blessings they enjoy as a result of sacrifices made by these individuals.
