Read:
Read or retell the story of "Stone Soup." The award-winning illustrated version of this story, by Marcia Brown, is probably available at your local children's library. You can also find versions of the story online. If family members are familiar with the story, you might ask them to prepare in advance to act the story out.

Discuss:
What does this story teach about sharing and cooperation?
What does this story teach about learning to make do with little?
How could applying the lessons of this story help make our world a better place?

Read:
Mosiah 18:27-29

Discuss:
In what ways does our family share our abundance with others?
Are there ways we might simplify our lives, making it possible for us to impart more abundantly?

Activity:
Invite your family to make a special gesture this Thanksgiving in order to impart more abundantly to people in need: instead of having a large family dinner, celebrate Thanksgiving with a simple meal of "stone soup." Donate the money or food you save to an organization that fights hunger (a local soup kitchen or food pantry, an international relief agency, the Church's fast offering or humanitarian fund, etc.).

Make preparing the "stone soup" a fun family activity. Put a real stone in the pot, carefully cleaned and sterilized (in boiling water or bleach). Invite family members to propose ingredients for the soup. To view one person's recipe for "stone soup," click here.
