A Shot Heard Round the World

Suggested Hymns:
Battle Hymn of the Republic (Hymns 60)
The Star-Spangled Banner (Hymns 340)

Discuss:
The gunshot that started the American revolution is often called "a shot heard round the world" because it had such far-reaching consequences. How has American democracy inspired people in other parts of the world?

Read:
Isaiah 58:6
2 Corinthians 3:17
D&C 98:5-7

Discuss:
In what sense is the worldwide rise of democracy and freedom the work of the Spirit?
Where in the world are people still denied democratic freedoms or human rights?
Are there people in our own country whose freedoms or human rights are limited?
As citizens, what can we do to promote liberty and justice for all?

Activity:
Celebrate Independence Day by exercising your democratic power to influence public policy. During this family home evening, you've identified ways in which people's freedoms or human rights are being limited. As a family, write to an elected official about one of these concerns.
