"There Should Be No Persecutions"

Suggested Hymns:
We Are Different (Children's Songbook 263)
I Am a Child of God (Hymns 301)
Love One Another (Hymns 308)

Read:
Psalm 133
Mosiah 27:2-4
D&C 136:34

"There is no room for discrimination in the Church.... We in the Church must remember that we have a history of persecution, discrimination against our civil rights, and our constitutional privileges being withheld from us.... We ask the Church members to strive to emulate the example of our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, who gave us the new commandment that we should love one another. I wish we could remember that." (The Teachings of Harold B. Lee, 384)

Discuss:
Why did the pioneers have to flee west? Did persecution of the Saints end even then?
What examples of intolerance, persecution, or discrimination do we see in today's world?
How can people with different beliefs and values learn to live together?
As Saints and as citizens, what can we do to promote tolerance and equality for all?

Activity:
As a family, do something that will help you learn about a religious, ethnic, or cultural group other than your own. For example, you might

  • visit the worship services of another faith community.
  • attend an ethnic community celebration.
  • see an artistic or historical exhibit.
  • rent a documentary about the experiences of a minority group.
  • eat at an ethnic restaurant. (Small "hole in the wall" establishments often provide the most authentic experience.)

In preparation for the experience, do a little research online or at your local library. Discuss with your family the question: How does learning about others help prevent intolerance like that suffered by the early Saints?
