A Land Free to All

Suggested Hymns:
Book of Mormon Stories (Children's Songbook 118)
Father in Heaven (Hymns 133)
Jehovah, Lord of Heaven and Earth (Hymns 269)

Read:
1 Nephi 13:12-14

Activity:
Ask family members to list as many native American tribes or peoples as they can think of. (Examples: Aztec, Inca, Navajo, Inuit.) Then ask family members to list ethnic or national groups from other parts of the world who have come to the Americas since the time of Columbus, either during the colonial period or more recently. (Examples: Spanish, English, Africans, Jews, Irish, Poles, Chinese, Bosnians.)

Read:
2 Nephi 1:5-6
D&C 10:45-46, 50-51

Discuss:
How has the coming of so many peoples to the New World been a blessing? How has it been a source of conflict?
How have New World nations promoted the ideals of freedom and equality for all?
For which ethnic or national groups has the New World not always been a land "free unto all"?

Pray:
As you close this home evening, pray (as the Book of Mormon prophets prayed) that the New World will indeed be a land of freedom for all peoples.
