"The False Gods We Worship"

Suggested Hymns:
God of Our Fathers, Whose Almighty Hand (Hymns 78)
God of Our Fathers, Known of Old (Hymns 80)

Read:
Spencer W. Kimball, "The False Gods We Worship" (Ensign [June 1976]: 3-6)

Discuss:
What are the false gods that President Kimball said Americans worship?

President Kimball reminded the Saints that "where much is given, much is expected." The United States is the wealthiest country on earth. According to President Kimball, how should Americans use that wealth?

In 2003, the U.S. Department of Defense was given more than $360 billion from the federal budget. What did President Kimball teach was the true key to national defense?

Though he chastised Americans, President Kimball also said that "there is much that is good in this land, and much to love." In what ways have Americans been a force for good?

Activity:
Help each family member create a miniature American flag (the size of an index card) using crayons, markers, or construction paper. Then give each family member a half-sized sheet of paper or a similarly sized piece of posterboard. Ask each family member to copy down a quotation from President Kimball's address that they found inspiring or thought-provoking. Finally, affix the miniature American flag to the quotation and post it someplace where your family member can see it often.
