Building up Zion

Suggested Hymns:
High on the Mountain Top (Hymns 5)
O Saints of Zion (Hymns 39)
Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel (Hymns 252)

Read:
Moses 7:17-18
4 Nephi 1:2-3, 15-17
D&C 58:6-11
D&C 78:5-6

Discuss:
What do we learn from these passages about what it means to build up Zion?

Read:
"[The pioneers] were ordinary men and women, plain spoken, hard working, but made noble because they shared a vision, a vision of a different world, a world where injustice and oppression, poverty and ignorance would be dispelled and a world where men and women would be brothers and sisters." (Alexander B. Morrison, Church News [14 Oct. 1995]: 4)

Discuss:
How did the pioneers seek to build up Zion?
How can we promote the values and principles of Zion in today's world?

Activity:
As a family, work together to create a large drawing or collage (like a mural) to represent Zion, or the kind of world that the pioneers were working to create. Be creative: What would today's world look like if people lived by the values of Zion? What can people do in the here and now to help create such a world? Title your mural, "Seek to establish the cause of Zion" (D&C 12:6)
