Provo Citizens Gather Again to Protest the War and Call for Peace on
International Peace Day (September 21)
Established by a United Nations resolution in 1981, the International
Day of
Peace was first celebrated September 1982. As Provo Citizens gather,
thousands of other vigils will be taking place across the globe. Provo,
UT - Citizens in Provo are gathering on Friday September 21, at 7:00
PM; less than a month after their Peace Vigil in Pioneer Park. They
will
gather this time in front of Senator Orrin Hatch's office in Provo City
(51
S. University Ave., 84601) on the International Day of Peace.
Provo, Utah, the same city that the Bay Area Center for Voting Research
called "the most conservative city in the United States",
has become a hot
spot of antiwar activism in Utah County and the State. Citizens previously
gathered on August 28, 2007 at a massive rally (over 80 participants
according to the Deseret Morning News) in Provo's Pioneer Park.
"It doesn't matter that we live in the most conservative city
in America.
People are waking up here. The Bush Administration and the war are losing
more support everyday. The lies that they told to gain support for the
invasion have been exposed, and now they continue to obscure the truth
about
Iraq as they insist that the surge is working" said Ash Bledsoe,
contact for
RAAW Provo & MESJ Utah County.
"The war has taken the lives of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi
civilians,
over 3700 soldiers, and cost American taxpayers nearly a half-trillion
dollars. It has not been, as House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio)
suggested, a 'small price'" concluded Ash Bledsoe.
"Everyone is welcome at the event. People of all political persuasions
in
this state are calling on our elected representatives, including Sen.
Orrin
Hatch and Sen. Robert Bennett, to end this war right now and bring the
troops home" said Bledsoe.
Participants will have the opportunity to hear from local Vietnam Veterans,
participate in a candlelight vigil to remember the dead, and write a
note
the Senator Hatch. The letters and cards the participants bring and
make at
the vigil will later be delivered to the Senator's office.
Vigils and protests like this one are part of the International Day
of
Peace, established by a United Nations resolution in 1981, the International
Day of Peace was first celebrated September 1982. Thousands of other
peace
vigils are taking place the same day on every continent.
"Provo is joining the rest of the world in solidarity as we reaffirm
a
shared commitment to the end of war, racism, poverty, and the destruction
of
the environment" said event organizer Ash Bledsoe.
